The University of South Carolina is offering licensing opportunities for Targeting MicroRNA-466 Family and MicroRNA-762 to Prevent Inflammation Driven Obesity
Background:
The incidence of obesity has grown significantly in the last 25 years leading to upwards of 1.45 billion overweight adults in the world, of which approximately 500 million are obese. This triggers chronic disease states, including type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndromes and cardiovascular disease, which together contribute to high rates of mortality and morbidity.
Invention Description:
We have identified novel microRNA that can be targeted in vivo to prevent obesity and associated inflammation.
Potential Applications:
Macrophages play a critical role in inflammation seen in many diseases including metabolic disorders, obesity, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, autoimmune diseases, and the like. We have identified microRNA that can control inflammation mediated by such macrophages which provide the key to successful prevention and treatment of such disorders.
Advantages and Benefits:
This is a novel approach to selectively target specific microRNA, previously not characterized.
