Hearing Screening Simulator Application

Description:

Reference #: 01519

The University of South Carolina is offering licensing opportunities for Hearing Screening Simulator Application

Background:

Speech-Language Pathologists conduct hearing screening tests to try to identify hearing problems early. If a potential problem is identified, the subject is sent for a full hearing evaluation. The problem is that there is no existing system to provide training except using the physical devices. This is expensive and does not address remote learner.

Invention Description:

Software-based Simulator to provide speech and hearing students the ability to perform hearing screening training using a realistic interface similar to devices used to perform these tests. It provides results for Otoscopy, Tympanometry, and Audiometry testing, and assesses the student’s responses for correctness.

Potential Applications:

This application is primarily targeted to students in the field of communication disorders (speech-language pathologists and audiologists), but could be used in training nurses, teachers, and others involved in conducting hearing screenings.

Advantages and Benefits:

Invention does not require the use of specialty devices, with limited availability, and provides a good alternative for remote learners. This technology automatically assesses the learners and provides feedback. Learners do not need supervision which is significant due to the shortage of faculty. Application can run on any windows computer, including a computer lab, making the training more accessible.
