The University of South Carolina is offering licensing for a method of preparation of thermoplastic epoxidized polymers and thermosetting materials from triglycerides.
Background:
Epoxidized soybean oils are commercially available and have been used as plasticizers in plastic industry. However, the preparation and application of epoxy resins from plant oils is still limited, due to the poor mechanical properties. This invention solves this problem detailing an alternative process/method for preparing epoxidized polymers.
Invention Description:
The subject invention is a simple method for the preparation/production of epoxidized polymers from plant oils and their curing to manufacture thermosetting materials and composites. The preparation method apart from being simple is low cost and scalable.
Potential Applications:
Epoxidized thermoplastic polymers resulting from the subject invention can be used to prepare thermosetting materials like soft elastomers and hard plastics, which can replace epoxy resins and composites derived from fossil oil.
Advantages and Benefits:
The preparation/production process is simple, sustainable and relatively cost effective.
